Extra Curricular Activities: Photo Club
Flower Study No. 4 – Ice Cream, You Scream, We All Scream for Flowers. Note to self: It's not that serious, have fun, and be creative.
This is the first post in my Extra Curricular Activities column, think of it like an afterschool club or sport you’d join, except now it’s the hobby or side business you started but sometimes forget to indulge in after work. These won’t be too serious. Just fun, visual, and maybe a little inspiring.
Before we get into this post, let’s back up for a minute.
Last year, I found myself at a pivot point in my career and decided to pick up a hobby I’ve always loved but never pursued professionally. Sure, I’d dabbled in photography for Instagram here and there, but nothing too serious. My career had always revolved around design and illustration…until I got laid off. That’s when I picked the camera back up and decided to fully dive into launching a product photography business. (Insert me laughing at my past self for thinking I’d be hitting $10k months with one month of experience but more on that in another post.)
Lately, I’ve been taking more photos than ever, just for fun, and to grow my portfolio. I thought Substack would be a great place to share them.
Ok let’s dive in:
For this shoot I wanted to create surreal ice cream cones with scoops of fluffy and airy peony flowers. Has this been done before, sure, almost everything has. I still wanted to play in this space though so here are some of my photos from the shoot.
I had so much fun shooting this, to be honest I think I could use some refresher courses in editing.
Homework:
Create a surreal still life of your own, no fancy equipment needed. Use your phone, a point-and-shoot, or whatever you’ve got on hand. Your only task?
Pair two things that don’t normally go together.
Ice cream and flowers? Why not. A spoonful of glitter? Go for it. The weirder the better.
Have fun. No pressure!
